![]() PlanterMason jar inspired planter. I milled the wood, formed the shape on a wood lathe, and vacuum formed a plastic shell in two parts that were welded together. The seam was heavily treated to remove the seam and the planter was painted to a reflective automotive shine. |

Ring Box Process
RING BOX FULL PROCESS
-
Custom ring box from foam core model to finishing
-
Milled wood, designed, joined, finished, and laser cut
-
Project required three different joining styles
![]() Foam core model of box design | ![]() Poplar board midway through milling process | ![]() Milled pieces cut to their final sizes with miter, dato, and rabbit cuts to create joins | ![]() Gluing and assembling the box using the different joinery styles |

The hinge screws were too long for the thickness of the box so I sanded down the screws to be flush with a piece of scrap wood of the same thickness. I drilled pilot holes in the box to compensate for the now flattened screws and attached the two halves to finish the box. As a final touch, I added felt feet to the box to protect the box and furniture from scratches and allow for easy movement. |
PLANTER FULL PROCESS

Custom planter project
-
Milled wood, lathed, joined, vacuum formed, and painted
-
Project required hidden seam, perfectly circular base, and highly reflective shine finish
![]() Milled wood has been stacked and glued with the corners cut off by bandsaw to prep for the wood lathe | ![]() Block has been formed into a cylinder on the wood lathe | ![]() Planter form using lathe tools and up to 800 grit sandpaper | ![]() Large form has been trimmed down to only jar form, given a draft angle, and attached to an MDF spacer for vacuum forming |
---|---|---|---|
![]() Vacuum formed planter half | ![]() Trimmed and sanded vacuum formed plastic halves | ![]() Halves have been welded together and heavily sanded. The crack is filled and disguised to be completely smooth with several thin sanded layers of Bondo. One of the three main project criteria is that the seam must be completely filled and disguised. | ![]() The first of six coats of primer with sanding between each layer to ensure a completely smooth finish, hidden seam, and an even base for the paint. |
![]() The sixth and final coat of primer sanded with 220 grit sandpaper for a completely smooth even finish. | ![]() A sanded early coat of automotive spray paint. Each coat has been wet sanded with increasingly high grit sandpaper between 220 and 800 grit. | ![]() The bonded and painted planter top. One of the project criteria was to make sure the planter formed a perfect circle from the two plastic halves so the halves were heavily sanded to achieve the correct shape when joined. | ![]() The sixth and final coat of spray paint after being wet sanded with 800 grit sandpaper. Even before the lacquer top coats, the paint is beginning to be reflective. |
![]() Between each of the four heavy coats of lacquer, layers were wet sanded with increasingly high grits of sandpaper from 1000-2000 grit. The planter is really starting to come to a reflective shine, one of the three main project criteria. |
